Hidden bugs and a tapped phone: how to detect them and when you need a sweep.

Recognizing the signs of covert eavesdropping or of spyware on your phone, and understanding when to rely on a professional electronic bug sweep. The guide from Arcadia Company's TSCM experts for the North Milan area.

The feeling of no longer being alone in your own home or office is among the most unsettling there is. A private conversation that seems to «leak» outside, a competitor who anticipates your confidential moves, an ex-partner who always seems to know where you are: these are situations in which the suspicion of a hidden bug or a tapped phone stops being paranoia and becomes a concrete risk to be verified.

The good news is that covert eavesdropping and spy software almost always leave traces. The bad news is that identifying them with certainty - and, above all, removing them without destroying the evidence - requires tools and expertise that a do-it-yourself approach cannot provide. This guide explains which signs to look out for and when it is worth requesting a professional electronic bug sweep (TSCM, Technical Surveillance Counter-Measures).

Covert listening devices: what they are and how to spot the signs

A bug is a device that captures audio (and sometimes video) and transmits or records it without the knowledge of the people present. It may be a radio bug hidden in a power socket, a recorder concealed inside an everyday object, a camera disguised as a smoke detector, or a GSM audio device that sends the surrounding sound to a remote number. Some recurring clues:

  • Unusual interference: buzzing, static or an «echo» on speakers, landline phones or car radios when the device transmits nearby.
  • Objects moved or «new»: sockets, power strips, sensors or gadgets that have appeared without explanation, or screws and cover plates recently removed.
  • Unexplained access: visits by technicians you never called, suspicious electronic gifts, or the sense that someone is anticipating confidential information.

These signs justify a check, but they are not enough to confirm anything: many modern devices transmit intermittently or record locally, staying invisible to a visual inspection. This is where the room bug sweep comes in, analyzing the radio spectrum and physically inspecting the premises with dedicated equipment.

A tapped phone: spyware and stalkerware

On the digital front, the most widespread threat is spyware (or stalkerware): an application secretly installed on the smartphone that forwards messages, calls, GPS location, photos and even the microphone's audio. Unlike hidden bugs, it does not require ongoing physical access: often a few minutes with the phone unlocked are enough. The symptoms not to underestimate:

  • A battery that drains quickly and a phone that stays warm even when idle, because of the processes running in the background.
  • Abnormal data usage toward unknown destinations, caused by the constant transmission of the information collected.
  • Strange behavior: sudden restarts, apps you don't remember installing, delays when shutting down or a screen that lights up for no reason.

Detecting and removing spyware without compromising the evidence is a delicate matter: a hasty uninstall wipes out the evidence that would be useful in any future criminal complaint. This is why phone spyware removal begins with a forensic analysis of the device, before any action is taken.

Why do-it-yourself is not enough

Apps that promise to «detect bugs» from your smartphone, or the cheap detectors bought online, give a false sense of security: they do not cover the entire frequency spectrum, they cannot tell a transmitter from an ordinary household signal, and they fail to find devices that record locally or transmit at intervals. A professional bug sweep is another matter entirely, and it works on several levels:

  • Radio-spectrum analysis (RF sweep): searching for active transmitters across a wide band of frequencies with professional analyzers.
  • Physical and instrument-based inspection: non-linear junction detectors, thermal cameras and checks of sockets, furnishings, vehicles and network infrastructure.
  • Checking lines and devices: inspection of phones, data networks and - where needed - IT malware sweeps on PCs and servers.

The result is not merely «finding or not finding»: it is a documented technical report, mapping out what was detected, that can be used for legal or defensive purposes.

The legal framework: eavesdropping is a crime

Listening to or recording other people's conversations with covert devices is not a «grey area»: it is a criminal offence. Installing bugs in places of private dwelling constitutes the offence of unlawful interference with private life (art. 615-bis c.p.), while installing equipment to intercept communications is punished under art. 617-bis c.p. Anyone subjected to such conduct is a victim and has the right to protect themselves.

This is exactly why the sweep must be entrusted to an operator authorized pursuant to art. 134 TULPS, who works within the bounds of the law:

  • Confidentiality and GDPR: the operation protects the client's private life and is covered by professional secrecy, in compliance with EU Regulation 2016/679.
  • Usable report: the technical report is dated, documented and signed, structured to be filed together with a criminal complaint or in court.
  • ISO 9001 certified methodology: every sweep follows verifiable protocols - one of the certifications and prefectural authorizations that qualify Arcadia Company.
